Health Benefits of Water Spinach

I bet most of us know Popeye and his very famous energy booster, the mighty spinach. When we were kids, we probably thought that it can only be found on cartoons, but wait, did you know that we have our very own type of Spinach growing here in the Philippines?

This tropical plant is the Water Spinach, with a scientific name of Ipomea Aquatica, or more commonly known here in our country as our very own “Kangkong”. You wouldn’t have any difficulties in finding this vegetable as this is popular among Filipinos, offered at a very cheap price at $0.25 per bundle (that’s about Philippine Peso: 10) over at the market or grocery supermarkets.

Though it may be cheap, you’ll be amazed to discover on the wonders of this green leafy vegetable that you wouldn’t think twice on adding it to your daily menu! We all know that green leafy vegetables are sources of a lot of vitamins and nutrients, and water spinach is no exception. Here are some of the health benefits that you can get in Water Spinach/ Kangkong:

  • Good for your eyes! Water spinach/kangkong is a good source of Vitamin A and beta-carotene, and we all know that these vitamins are good for our eyesights.
  • Rich source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C plays a role in strengthening our body’s immune system so if you’re looking for another source of Vitamin C to add in your menu, you can include water spinach!
  • Good source of Iron. Green leafy vegetables are especially rich in iron, making it a good choice to eat for people with Anemia and other related diseases; pregnant women who require regular iron intake in their diet.
  • In Ayurveda medicine, it is said that kangkong has been used to help treat jaundice and problems of the liver.
  • It has antihelminitic property which helps treat intestinal worm infestation, skin diseases like ringworm, athletes foot and others.
  • Has detoxifying properties and is rich in antioxidants—- helping us prevent the deadly disease, cancer.
  • It is also a good source of amino acids, phosporous, and calcium.
  • It is also rich in fiber—contributing to its laxative properties that can help those who are suffering from constipation.
  • However, take note of this one tiny detail: Be careful when eating kangkong raw, as this might make you prone to be infected with intestinal fluke Fasciolopsis buski, the one responsible for the disease Fasciolopsiasis.
